Afghanistan's No. 1-Export-Drugs

Drugs.

Yes, Afghanistan's Number One export is drugs. Afghanistan supplies 80% of the heroin for Europe and the opium poppy is the largest cash crop.

Although the Taliban opposes the use of drugs as part of their strict Islamic code, they use the opium to finance themselves and it is the livlihood of many small farmers. To the Taliban mind, it is a wonderful thing. Cash for poisoning the Christian west. Could anything be better to the radical Islamic mind.

The Number One Province for producing opium is Helmand, which is the greatest Taliban stronghold. The fact that the government is trying to eradicate the raising of poppies in Helmand has caused resistance among the Taliban (it would cut off a source of lucrative funding), the drug lords of Helmand (who would be out of business) and the small farmers in the area who raise the crop who will be driven into poverty.

Interestingly, the transition away from drug crops in Afghanistan begins in Taliban controlled areas.

Interesting.
