Holy Ground

Holy Ground.

This is holy ground---We’re standing on holy ground.
For the Lord is present and where He is is holy.
This is holy ground---We’re standing on holy ground.
For the Lord is present and where He is is holy.

We are standing---On holy ground,
And I know that there are angels all around.
Let us praise Jesus now,
We are standing in his presence, on holy ground.

This famous praise chorus was written by Geron Davis when he was nineteen years old in 1983. His father had asked him to write a song for the dedication of his church in Savannah, Georgia. The song was written in 10-15 minutes when the boy was dead tired. It was not recorded by any major record artist at the time but caught on in his and other churches. Since that time, it has been recorded countless times and is one of our most beloved praise songs.

The song is loved because it speaks of the presence of God. It is the sweet presence of God, that sweet quiet Spirit, that invades our lives and our Christian groups from time to time. And once we have tasted of it, nothing else seens to satisfy us spiritually.

That Holy Ground is sometimes when God touches our heart and we feel his presence and know that He is. He is real, and He is present. At other times it is when the Spirit of God touches us corporately as a group. Perhaps we have been worshipping God, and God chooses to touch our worship and we know His presence and that He is there. The angels join in as we praise and worship.

Jesus truly becomes "Emmanuel" to us, meaning “God is with us.”

When God comes on to the scene it is personal and intimate. He comes at a time of His choosing. When we experience the touch of God, anything else seems formal and cold. We have tasted the fresh wine and hot bread of God. Anything else is moldy, bitter and tasteless. We have been spoiled for the world. We have tasted reality.

What we need as Christians is not more programs or church meetings or even Bible studies. We need to experience God's presence. We need to enter into a love affair with God where we recognize His great love for us and we begin to love Him with all of our minds, emotions and heart.

It is only then that we can sit down to the wedding feast of God’s love and fully enter in.
